Sleep and energy

Fatigue

The initial verdict

Perimenopause can contribute to fatigue through disrupted sleep, mood changes and heavier bleeding. Exhaustion also has many other causes. Hormones should begin the investigation, not end it.

Clues the timing may be hormonal

  • Fatigue appeared beside cycle changes.
  • Night sweats or repeated waking are wrecking sleep.
  • Brain fog, mood changes or hot flushes joined the same plotline.
  • Periods became heavier, longer or more frequent.
  • Energy shifts noticeably across the cycle.
The Investigation Continues

How the menopause transition can flatten your battery

Changing hormones can affect sleep, temperature, mood and concentration. Each issue can drain energy alone. Together, they form an exhaustion committee nobody elected.

Heavier bleeding can reduce iron. Low iron may cause tiredness, weakness, headaches, dizziness or breathlessness.

Other causes deserve a proper look

  • Iron deficiency or anaemia.
  • Thyroid problems.
  • Insomnia or sleep apnoea.
  • Depression, anxiety or prolonged stress.
  • Infection, diabetes or medication effects.

Take this evidence to your appointment

  1. 01

Track energy, sleep and cycle changes.

  2. 02

    Record period heaviness and duration.

  3. 03

    Mention dizziness, weakness or breathlessness.

  4. 04

Ask whether blood count, iron or thyroid tests are appropriate.

Do not file these under ordinary tiredness

  • Sudden severe weakness, fainting or confusion.
  • Chest pain or severe breathlessness.
  • Very heavy bleeding with dizziness.
  • Severe depression or suicidal thoughts.
Being exhausted is not a moral failing. Track the pattern and demand a plan more useful than ‘try relaxing’.
